What I Do

Build. Fix. Grow.

Build.

Turn an idea or opportunity into something commercially real.

From product development and commercialization to manufacturing capability and international market entry. I work from the idea through execution, putting the people, processes and resources in place to make it work.

Fix.

Solve the problem that's preventing the required outcome.

Stalled commercialization. Manufacturing and operational problems. Quality and delivery failures. Turnarounds. Major customer issues. Situations where continuing to do more of the same isn't going to produce a different result.

Grow.

Turn capability into measurable growth and value.

Scale manufacturing. Commercialize new products. Enter new markets. Improve operations. Create new revenue opportunities. Help founders, CEOs and investors turn potential into results.

Selected Outcomes

The problem. The action. The outcome.

Food & CPG · Commercialization and manufacturing scale-up

From product challenge to commercial production

Problem
A high protein donut had to do something technically difficult: deliver the taste and texture consumers expected while also working at commercial scale.
The work
I worked alongside the founder and team across formulation, process, equipment and packaging, then helped transition production from co manufacturing into a new manufacturing facility.

A major customer relationship was at risk

Problem
An acquired operation was struggling with quality and delivery performance, putting an important customer contract in jeopardy.
The work
Rather than treating it purely as a process problem, I focused on the people doing the work, leadership, accountability and reconnecting the team directly with the customer.

Building the operation, not just the market entry plan

The Dammam Application Support Center was the first international operation of its kind and became the model for similar facilities in other markets.

When to Call Rough Road

When the outcome matters and additional experience, leadership or bandwidth is needed to deliver it.

Rough Road works with founders, CEOs and investors facing a specific business challenge with a measurable outcome to deliver.

A product needs to move from development to commercial scale. Manufacturing needs to be built, transferred or fixed. An operation is underperforming. A major customer or contract is at risk. A new market needs to become an operating reality. An investor or private equity team needs experienced leadership to address an operating challenge or accelerate value creation within a portfolio company. A founder or management team needs additional leadership for a specific challenge without making a permanent executive hire.

Founder Paul Raybould is a dual U.S. and UK citizen with extensive international operating experience across the U.S., UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa, bringing particular value to businesses entering the U.S., expanding internationally or operating across markets.

Engagements can be structured as operating advisory, fractional or interim leadership, or a defined special project, depending on the problem and the outcome required.

About

Paul Raybould · Founder

Experience that crosses the usual boundaries

I have spent my career moving across industries, functions and countries, but the work has had a consistent thread: something important needed to get done.

I have built businesses and operations, developed and commercialized products, scaled manufacturing, turned around underperforming operations, won and protected major customer relationships and established businesses in new international markets.

That breadth matters. Difficult business problems rarely fit neatly inside one function. A commercialization problem can become a manufacturing problem. A manufacturing problem can be a people problem. A market entry strategy ultimately becomes an operating, supply chain and execution problem.

I founded Rough Road Partners to bring that experience to founders, CEOs and investors who need more than advice. I work alongside the people doing the work, understand what is preventing the required outcome and stay close to the execution.

My experience spans founder led and private equity backed businesses across consumer products, food and nutrition, pet, aerospace and industrial markets. I am a dual U.S. and UK citizen and have built and led businesses and operations across the U.S., UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

How I Work

Start with the problem. Define the measurable outcome.

Every engagement starts with understanding the problem and agreeing on the measurable outcome required, not fitting the work into a predetermined consulting model.

Depending on the situation, Rough Road can provide operating advisory, fractional or interim leadership, or a defined special project.

I don't measure success by activity, hours worked, meetings held or reports produced. Those are outputs. The measure of success is whether the work produces the agreed outcome.

Some assignments require a few weeks of focused work. Others require ongoing involvement alongside the management team. The structure and level of involvement depend on the problem, the work required and the measurable outcome to be delivered.
